The Alice Paul Institute [API] will reopen to the public with a free open house on August 26, 2021, from 12-4 p.m., the 26th is Women’s Equality Day, designated by Congress as the annual observance of the certification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920, which granted women the right to vote.
The all-ages event at API will feature activities focused on the historic and ongoing struggle for gender equality. Guests will learn about the Equal Rights Amendment, which was drafted by Alice Paul, through video, audio clips, and documents. They will be invited to engage in their own advocacy efforts by writing postcards to elected officials, creating signs, customizing buttons, and more.
The Marketing the Movement pop-up exhibit, which details the work the suffragists did to get the word out about the cause of women’s rights, will be on display on the porch. Guests can also step inside Paulsdale, the childhood home of Alice Paul, to explore the Alice Paul: In Pursuit of Equality exhibit. Other activities include a selfie station with ERA-themed props and lawn games. Visitors can also pack a lunch and enjoy the site’s new picnic table.
“We are very excited to reopen the Alice Paul Institute and welcome the public to commemorate such an important day in women’s history,” said API Programs Director Alyssa Hunt.
All visitors are required to wear a mask while indoors at the event in accordance with recent recommendations from the CDC. The majority of the day’s activities will take place outside.
Following the 26th, Paulsdale will be open to the public for guided and self-guided tours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 12-5 p.m. For more information, visit www.alicepaul.org.
