The Diversity & Equal Opportunity Network (DEON) is hosting its first annual Book Drive to help support the Evesham Township public schools. DEON seeks to increase diversity, inclusion, and equity within the Evesham Township School District and is calling upon the community to help support the school district with its efforts. This last school year has been hard on the educational budget along with next year’s budget changes, and DEON’s goal in this book drive is to help alleviate pressure the schools face to meet new educational standards by facilitating the collection of over 250 books for each school to enhance the libraries.
The Kick-Off for the two-month book drive will commence outside of the Evesham Township Library, 984 Tuckerton Road, with a Facebook Live event hosted by the DEON Leadership Team. Community members can participate by selecting books from DEON’s Amazon wish list and have them delivered directly or drop off in person to our DEON Book Drive drop bin conveniently located at Evesham Township’s Municipal Building, in the lobby right outside the Library entrance doors.
DEON continues to nurture current relationships and create new connections in the Evesham community and more drop-off location announcements are anticipated, along with a list of other participating retailers and independent bookstores to purchase books in addition to the current Amazon wish list.
The significance of the dates of the book drive is of particular interest to highlight:
April 21st, our Book Drive Kick-Off, is also Ram Navami, a Hindu day of worship and celebration. Lord Rama is considered the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu and it is believed that worshipping him on this day indicates the removal of bad powers and entrance of divine power on the earth.
May 21st, our midway point, marks the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, a day set aside by the United Nations as an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the values of cultural diversity and to learn to live together in harmony. Reading a variety of books with a broad range of diverse characters and experiences fosters understanding, engagement, knowledge, visibility, and empathy in children. These books reaffirm the value that each person in the community brings to the world.
The book donations will be presented to the Evesham Township School District at the end of June following our Finale Event held at Savich Field on Monday, June 21st, which also corresponds with National Indigenous Peoples Day. This is of fascinating significance with the recent discovery that Evesham Township’s very own Savich Field is an ancient Indigenous burial ground. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend both the Book Drive Kick-Off and Finale events. We greatly appreciate the community support in strengthening our K-8 schools!
