The Moorestown Recreation Department is offering one-week, in-person theatre mini-camps for two age groups — 7 to 10 year olds and 10 to 13 year olds. There will be a maximum registration of 10 children per session and camps will be Mondays to Fridays from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
This year, one cohesive musical cannot be produced, but this is a great way to get an immersive theater experience. Students will still learn all aspects of theater production including on stage performance and the technical aspects behind the curtains (props, costumes, lighting and set design). The emphasis will be on singing and dancing, and there will be an opportunity to work on public speaking skills, skit and monologue performances and poetry reading. By the end of the week children will be able to perform a popular Disney or Broadway song and dance from memory.
Co-directors, Caroline Voyak and Kevin Kulp, are products of Moorestown’s summer theatre camp, and both have taught the program for more than ten years. They each bring a passion and knowledge of their craft.
Voyak, a music education major at Westminster Choir College, will start the day teaching the fundamentals of music and song. Her technical background is complimented by her study of different teaching techniques. Kulp will virtually zoom in for the second part of the class that will cover dance and choreography. Kulp is a professional New York City musical theatre actor and has performed in national tours of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” “A Christmas Story the Musical” and regionally at the Walnut Street Theatre (amongst many other productions and venues).
Keep the creative forces flowing with “Art in the Park.” Instructor Sophia Geiger will be teaching one-day art workshops from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the New Albany Recreation Center at Jeff Young Park. Children in grades two to six will go on colorful, expressive journeys with classes — “Melted Crayon”, “Splatter/Abstract Art” and “Tie Dyeing.” Attendees can create a colorful hand dyed t-shirt or flick, swirl and splatter paint or crayon for a liberating art experience.
Tracie Muhr will be teaching “Fine Art and Drawing” workshops for grades three to eight. These are four-day intensive workshops from 1 to 4 p.m. that will cover fundamental techniques and explore line, shape, form and texture. Students will experience blind contour drawing to understand perspective, learn lighting and shading and much more. An artist whose work exemplifies the topic of the day will be introduced. Materials will include pencils, markers, oil and chalk pastels.
Children must come with a snack and mask to all programs. Current New Jersey State COVID-19 Safety Standard Guidelines will be followed. Daily health checks and temperatures will be taken upon entering each facility.
