In the wake of the killing of George Floyd, members of our community have expressed a desire to learn more about systemic racism and how to become an ally to African-Americans. MooreUnity is hosting an on-line film screening and discussion of the movie “13th “on Thursday, June 25 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. This is an opportunity to watch, listen and learn.
This documentary argues that mass incarceration is an extension of slavery. Filmmaker Ava DuVernay received an Academy Award nomination for this documentary that explores the history of racial inequality in the United States. It questions why our prisons are disproportionately filled with African-Americans, and why the United States is home to 5 percent of the world’s population yet has 25 percent of the world’s prisoners.
People are invited to view the movie with us live on-line at 7 p.m. or watch on their own ahead of time and join us for discussion starting at 8:30 p.m. Carole Butler, Director of Curriculum and Instruction at the Moorestown School District will be facilitating our conversation.
