Mayor’s Message: Grace period extended to June 1 for second quarter tax payment

Mayor Gattinelli also discusses Washington Township's plans for "virtual" Super Saturday.

Washington Township Extends 2nd Quarter Tax Payment until June 1, 2020

At my request, township council approved a resolution to extend the grace period for second quarter property taxes normally due on May 1 to June 1. This decision was made after Gov. Murphy issued an executive order granting municipalities the authority to extend the grace period. This extension allows property owners to make payments to the tax collector on or before June 1 without being charged interest or penalties. Payments received after June 1 will be charged interest from May 1. Council and I felt this was necessary due to the economic challenges many of our residents are facing from this pandemic.

Please be advised any payments received after June 1 will accrue interest retroactively to May 1 in accordance with state law.

Washington Lake Park: Annual Super Saturday Event

Around this time of year, our community would start to look forward to spending the day at Washington Township’s annual Super Saturday event. A day where residents would enjoy various games, inflatable rides, pony rides, free face painting, balloon art, food trucks, numerous crafts, businesses and community vendors from the area. Most importantly, this event was about coming together as a community. Unfortunately, this year’s Super Saturday had to be cancelled because of guidelines in place to stop the spread of coronavirus. My administration and I wanted to do something special to keep that sense of community alive. On Saturday, May 9, a webpage will be created and filled with information, pictures and videos from our police department, fire department, and some of our vendors to make the very first “Virtual Super Saturday.” Coming together as a community is what Washington Township does best.  We hope all residents will take the time to visit our website and check out this new and exciting experience and support our very first “Virtual Super Saturday.” We will not let this pandemic keep us down.  Together we are stronger than the virus.

Joann Gattinelli is the mayor of Washington Township and can be reached at [email protected].
