AWA hosting last-chance shelter tours

This year the AWA is replacing the deteriorating shelter building with a new state-of-art animal adoption and education center

The Animal Welfare Association has announced the final dates of it’s Tails and Tours Series – AWA’s Last Chance Tours. These tours are the public’s last chance to tour the more than 50-year-old shelter before demolition begins.

“Many in our community still remember when Centennial Blvd. was a dirt road,” Maya Richmond Executive Director said. “And tell me wonderful stories adopting their first family pet from our shelter.”

AWA has been in based out of Voorhees for nearly 60 years.  In 2020, the AWA will be replacing the deteriorating shelter building with a new state-of-art animal adoption and education center.

“During the tour, [visitors] will learn about our fascinating history, our life-saving programs, and visit with the happy, furry faces that you help to save,” Marian Conicella, the capital campaign director with the Animal Welfare Association said.

Attendees will get a sneak peek at the new shelter plans and insight into AWA’s expanding programs once the new building opens. The following dates and times are still available for tours. You must RSVP in advance as space for each tour is limited.

  • Sunday, March 15 at 10:00 a.m.
  • Tuesday, March 17 at 6:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, March 22 at 10:00 a.m.
  • Tuesday, March 24 at 6:00 p.m.

Interested parties should RSVP with Marian by emailing her at [email protected] at least 48 hours prior to the tour date and time, space permitting.

“After a year of fundraising we are nearing the $2.5 million dollar goal yet, the cost of steel is going up with the Coronavirus outbreak and we will need to raise even more to stay on our construction timeline,” Richmond said.
