Late last month on Sunday, June 23, the Islamic Weekend School in Voorhees Township hosted its annual Graduation Ceremony on behalf of Muslim American Community Association Board of Trustees.

The school’s principal and Pakistani American Community Leader Aqil Khan addressed the audience with the message of importance of cultural education and civic engagement and parent’s responsibilities to raise their children as a good citizen of our esteemded country USA.

Among dignitaries and invited guests were Freeholder Susan Shin Angulo and Camden County Cultural Awareness Commission Chair Stella Sytnik; both were charged with presenting awards and gift certificates to outstanding students and teachers along with citations from state Senate and Assembly for their excellent community work.

Angulo stressed the importance of young people of varied backgrounds to have the tools necessary to go confidently into the diverse communities where they live.

Chair Sytnik’s message to the children was that they should never forget or be afraid to share their own traditions; however they should embrace and adopt traditions of the country that they now call their home and be respectful of all other ethnicities who reside in our diverse county.

A traditional picnic outside followed the ceremony and was a colorful display of traditional food from Pakistan, Morocco, Egypt and other countries.
