Warmer weather is here and there is so much going on in Deptford Township. Our community garden plots are still available at Andaloro Farm. While you are there consider visiting The Museum of American History located at 138 Andaloro Way and check out the World War II Exhibit. There is a beautiful playground behind the museum for kids to play and have fun. Our council members have planned a great emphasis on improving and installing new playground equipment. These play areas promote outdoor activity, physical fitness and bring families and neighbors together. Most neighborhood playgrounds are within walking distance and if not you can visit Fasola Park since it’s always expanding. There are activities for all ages. The splash pad will officially open Memorial Day weekend.
Deptford Township also has terrific youth sports leagues and complexes. Consider signing your children up for a sport. There are great benefits besides outdoor activity. They will learn the value of teamwork and good sportsmanship while building confidence and self-esteem.
Recycling is a subject every town in NJ and the country will continue to struggle with. The market to sell recyclables has severely shrunk. We are asking everyone to look at the website for what can be recycled in to your container. Things like using tap water and filtered water to eliminate plastic bottles is huge. Use your garbage disposal for food waste. There is an article in the newsletter about helping to eliminate grass clippings which is a huge disposal issue. We are looking into having a recycling App available soon for tips on how you can help.
Our Spring/Summer Newsletter has been mailed to our residents. If you did not receive a copy, please contact the Manager’s Office at (856) 686-2220. One topic of discussion is the Sears store closing. The Deptford Mall is in the process of purchasing and getting approvals and permits to begin renovations at this space. It will be a complete makeover when done and we are looking forward to getting started. One effect of businesses closing is the loss of jobs which people have worked at for several years. Although it is exciting for the town we hope these employees have found work. As we move forward, Starbucks is opening this month along with a new AT&T store. We are working every day with our businesses to keep Deptford Township thriving.
Have a great month, enjoy the warmer weather and please put the Oak Valley Memorial Day Parade on your calendar for Sunday, May 26. Bring the family out to honor those who served. There will be a fantastic parade and after the ceremony there will be a barbecue provided by Deptford Township. Check out our calendar of events in the newsletter, Facebook and website for a full list of upcoming events in Deptford Township.
