The department will have extra patrols on the road looking for distracted drivers.

The following information is on file with the Mt. Laurel Police Department:

The Mt. Laurel Township Police Department is warning drivers that April is Distracted Driving Month and the department will have extra patrols on the road looking for distracted drivers.

The move comes as part of New Jersey’s UDrive. UText. UPay. campaign.

According to police, distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving.

Police say all distractions endanger driver, passenger and bystander safety, including the following: texting, using a cellphone or smartphone, eating and drinking, talking to passengers, grooming, reading (including maps), using a navigation system, watching a video, and adjusting a radio, CD player or MP3 player.

Police recommend all drivers view every month as Distracted Driving Month, as distracted driving is a “dangerous epidemic” on New Jersey’s roadways, being cited as a major contributing factor in more than 804,000 motor vehicle crashes in the state from 2011 to 2015.

Police warn than anyone operating a motor vehicle in an unsafe manner due to distracted driving could be pulled over.
