The spelling bee will be held at Allen School at 7 p.m.
The Woman’s Club of Medford is sponsoring the 21st Annual Spelling Bee at Milton H. Allen School on Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. (Inclement weather date is Jan. 16). Registration begins at 6:15 pm.
The spelling bee is open to all Medford fifth graders. A parent or guardian must accompany each participant; however, the event is open to all in the community.
The first place winner receives a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble for $100, the second place winner receives a $75 gift certificate and the third place winner receives a $25 gift certificate. The top three winners proceed to the District Level meet and the finalists from that meet go on to the Women’s Club of New Jersey’s State Bee in New Brunswick.
The principals and teachers have received a packet to help prepare the contestants for the meet. The packet includes a practice word list, the list of rules and all the information pertaining to the spelling bee itself.
This program gives the children the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. It is a valuable experience for them and helps build their self-confidence. There are refreshments served afterward to reward their endeavors.
The Woman’s Club of Medford’s current chairperson has served as a judge for the past three years and is a former Medford teacher, who has always found this event to be quite enjoyable.
