Press release from Monroe Township Police Department Facebook Page

The following is on file with the Monroe Township Police Department

On Oct. 15 around 1:30 p.m., Monroe Township Police were dispatched to the 4000 block of the S. Black Horse Pike for a report of a motor vehicle crash. MTPD units arrived to find a two vehicle crash involving a 2004 Lexus and a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado.

The driver of the Lexus, Mr. William “Sonny” Lea, an 83-year-old resident of Atlantic City, had pulled over to the shoulder for an unknown reason. While stopped in the shoulder, Lea’s vehicle was struck by the Colorado operated by a 39-year-old Sewell resident. The force of the impact caused the Lexus to be pushed off the road and into a wooded area.

Police began to open the vehicle at which time, Collings Lakes Fire Department arrived to complete the extrication. Additional fire and EMS units arrived on scene. Lea was removed from the vehicle treated by Monroe Township EMS for his injuries on scene and while en-route, met with paramedics and continued on to Jefferson Hospital in Washington Township.

Once stabilized, Mr. Lea was airlifted that evening to Cooper Hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Monroe Township Police were assisted on scene by Monroe Township EMS, Collings Lakes Fire, Cecil Fire, Inspira Paramedics and NJDOT.

The collision is being investigated by Officer John Van Leer #7123 of the MTPD. Any witnesses to the incident please contact Ptl. Van Leer at (856) 728–9800 ext. 583, or email [email protected].
