Locals are invited to celebrate “NJ Makers Day” with hands-on tech fun, DIY Projects and more.
The whole family is invited to celebrate maker culture with hands-on tech fun, do-it-yourself projects, STEM activities, crafts and more during the Fourth Annual Makers Faire scheduled for Saturday, March 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 pm. at the Burlington County Library in Westampton.
Sponsored by The Friends of the Library, Inc., Makers Faire is part of the New Jersey Makers Day celebration. Whether a tech wiz or a homespun crafter, according to library officials, all one needs to become a “maker” is an interest in hands-on projects and an enthusiasm for creating.
Throughout the day, visitors will be encouraged to create, tinker and explore at more than 30 “maker stations” set up inside the library. Look for 3D printing with NextFab of Philadelphia, remote control planes, recycled paper jewelry, stamp crafting for adults, origami, marble run mania, recycled robots, mini rockets, paper airplanes, record pressing and more. Visitors can learn about local businesses and organizations taking part in the “maker movement.”
Those who attend can also visit the Institute for Earth Observation’s Mobile Geoscience Laboratory presented by Rowan College at Burlington County and Palmyra Cove Nature Park.
Representatives from a variety of groups are expected to attend this year’s Makers Faire, including the Pinelands Institute for Natural and Environmental Studies, the Vegetarian Society of South Jersey, the Evesham Green Team, Motorhead Garage Productions, and the Friends of the Burlington County Animal Shelter. The library is also partnering with the Girl Scouts of South Jersey to award badges to Girl Scouts who attend the event.
According to library officials, New Jersey Makes Day began in 2015 to enhance community engagement and develop connections among residents throughout the state by collaborating with libraries, museums, small businesses and others to promote and explore new opportunities for entrepreneurship, innovation and hands-on learning experiences.
In 2016, the event was expanded to two days, drawing thousands of visitors to participating sites in all 21 counties.
This year, celebrations will be held at venues across the state on Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10. Visit www.njmakersday.org/ to learn more.
