The “Classically Black & Conversation Pieces” will be on Feb. 11 at First Presbyterian Church of Moorestown.
West Jersey Chamber Music Society is proud to present “Classically Black & Conversation Pieces” with acclaimed concert pianist Richard Alston performing works by African-American composers, including two pieces by women composers — Florence Price and Margaret Bonds.
The concert will be on Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Moorestown.
An internationally renowned classical pianist, Alston is a Julliard graduate who has captivated audiences through solo recitals, including appearances at Carnegie Hall, as a guest pianist with major orchestras, through live opera performance, radio and television broadcasts, as well as CD recordings. Alston has particularly drawn the attention of the music world in recent years for bringing to light the great contributions to classical music by composers of African descent, who remain to this day relatively unknown to the larger public.
The “Classically Black” program includes “Troubled Water” by Margaret Bonds, “Adagio in f Minor” by Chevalier de Saint-Georges and “Fantasie Negre” by Florence Price — among many others. The format of the concert will feature brief explanations of the music and cultural backgrounds interspersed between the musical pieces. The concert will be followed by a meet-the-musician reception with African-American and Southern desserts.
The concert is made possible by a grant from Holman Enterprises to help West Jersey Chamber Music Society bring classical music to an expanded and more diverse audience in Southern New Jersey. The evening is co-sponsored by The Neighborhood Center in Camden, an organization that is committed to providing a safe space for academic achievement, athletic accomplishment and artistic creativity.
