Four Seneca High School females attended a “Women In Engineering” seminar at Lockheed-Martin.
Four of Seneca High School’s female students, Naomi Bennett, Sharon Bennett, Kelsey Carter, and Camryn Lubner, attended a “Women In Engineering” hosted by Lockheed-Martin. The students were given a presentation about the various types of engineers that worked at Lockheed. After the presentation, the students participated in creating and designing hoop gliders, creating the most buoyant foil boat, and understanding electrostatic electricity with the Van De Graaf generator. The students then had an opportunity to examine production methods seeing first-hand, Lockheed employees working with customers and understanding the demands of meeting deadlines. Lastly, the students had the opportunity to solve a real world problem by using the engineering design process by creating a prototype to better express their solution.
Shawnee High School graduate Scott Hooper (’06) mentored the students as they learned that creativity, problem solving skills, team work, and work ethic were the major skills needed to be a successful engineer.
Sophomore Camryn Lubner said, “I really enjoyed the Women In Engineering Day. It opened my eyes to all the opportunities there all in the engineering field for women. I liked being able to participate in the activities and being able to ask questions to women in the field about how they got to where they are now.” Sophomore Naomi Bennett added, “I realized that gender did not play a role for those working at Lockheed, and it gave me the chance to consider the option of working in the engineering field as a woman.”
