Bunker Hill Middle School students to celebrate “Puerto Rico Discovery Day”

The sixth-grade celebration will take place on Monday, Nov. 20

Sixth-grade Spanish students at Bunker Hill Middle School will become cultural explorers on Monday, Nov. 20, as they take part in a “Puerto Rico Discovery Day.” The event, a celebration of food and music, starts at 11:30 a.m. in the school’s instructional media center.

Each student will have the opportunity to sample food provided by Jaritza Restaurant on Federal Street in Camden. Included on the menu will be arroz con gandules (rice and pigeon peas), pollo guisado (stewed chicken), empanadas de pollo (chicken empanadas), platanos maduros (ripe fried plantains) and Spanish-style macaroni salad.

After lunch, the students will be entertained by visitors from the Puerto Rican Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Students will be exposed by folklore music — “Bomba y Plena” — from Puerto Rico and have the opportunity to try out the instruments the musicians bring to the school.
