Burlington County Animal Shelter receives shelter dogs displaced by Hurricane Maria

Residents can show their support by adopting or fostering animals that are currently in the shelter.

Burlington County Freeholder Director Bruce Garganio has announced that the Burlington County Animal Shelter has taken in shelter dogs displaced by Hurricane Maria.

Garganio and the county are asking residents to once again help support the shelter in disaster relief efforts.

“We have a great group of people here in Burlington County and are glad to assist in this tremendous national effort to save lives,” Garganio said.

According to the county, The Burlington County Animal Shelter has prepared a designated space to help in these efforts. All of the dogs the County Shelter receives from Puerto Rico will be examined by veterinarians and available for adoption in the near future.

County officials say this is not the first time the county has acted as a relief shelter for animals displaced from disaster zones. Just a few weeks ago The Burlington County Animal Shelter received 10 shelter dogs displaced by Hurricane Harvey in Texas.

“Thanks to our devoted staff, volunteers, and the overwhelming support of our animal community in Burlington County, we are happy to say eight out of the 10 dogs we received from Texas have been adopted and two are pending adoption,” Garganio said. “We welcome the opportunity to help find forever homes here in Burlington County for the shelter dogs we are receiving from Puerto Rico”

Garganio is asking Burlington County residents to show their support by adopting or fostering animals that are currently in the shelter.

“We are proud of what we are doing here in Burlington County to save lives and find animals their forever homes. This has been an incredible experience for everyone involved,” Garganio said.

The Burlington County Animal Shelter is located at 35 Academy Drive in Westampton, behind the Burlington County Library. The shelter is open noon to 4 p.m. every day except Thursday, when it is open noon to 7 p.m. For more information, call (609) 265–5073 or visit the county website athttp://www.co.burlington.nj.us/168/Animal-Shelter.
