Community service exceeds classroom expectations
St. Augustine Prep seniors Angelo Gurcsik and Mark Zandanel of Washington Township began volunteering at The Unforgotten Haven in Blackwood this summer to fulfill the school’s required 100 hours of community service prior to graduation. With an initial goal of collecting donations for 250 “blessing bags,” filled with daily essentials beneficial to individuals who are homeless in the Camden and Philadelphia areas, the two surpassed their goal and have decided to continue their efforts with hopes of creating at least 400 bags for those in need.
Ten years in tune: Music at Bunker Hill celebrates anniversary of concert series
A lot has happened since Music at Bunker Hill opened its doors to some of New York City and Philadelphia’s best classical musicians 10 years ago. According to Artistic Director William Frampton, this year’s concert series will have one of the most exciting and impressive arrays of performers in the organization’s history.
Wedgwood Elementary math teacher named county Teacher of the Year
Wedgwood Elementary School basic skills math teacher Domenick Renzi knew he wanted to be a teacher when he was in third grade. After 22 years in education, cycling full circle from teaching to administrative roles, and back into teaching, Renzi was named not only the Washington Township Public Schools District Teacher of the Year last spring, but the Gloucester County Teacher of the Year, as of Sept. 1.
WTHS alum Dan Calhoun to join South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame
Former Washington Township High School wrestler Dan Calhoun will be among the 2017 inductees to the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame during a ceremony at Masso’s Catering in Glassboro on Nov. 11. A 1995 graduate, Calhoun was a three-time District 30 champion, a Region 8 champion and a two-time state qualifier for the Minutemen. He posted a 94–14–1 career record.
