Celebrity serves up global cuisine at the Evergreens

Celebrity chef Jehangir Mehta treated residents at The Evergreens in Moorestown to his culinary delights.

Celebrity Chef Jehangir Mehta (second from right) visited Center Stage of The Evergreens Main Dining Room to oversee the preparation of a special dinner for residents. The menu was prepared using the flavor of Mehta’s fresh, exotic cuisine.

The Evergreens, one of the continuing care retirement communities in the Philadelphia area, recently welcomed Celebrity Chef Jehangir Mehta to its Moorestown campus on Wednesday, Aug. 23. Residents were treated to a sampling of Chef Mehta’s global-inspired recipes, a meet-and-greet and a question and answer session. Mehta also conducted a cooking demo at Center Stage, located in the heart of the community’s Main Dining Room, and mingled with resident diners.

Mehta has established himself in the culinary world by juxtaposing ingredients and tastes from his native Mumbai with global flavors inspired by his travels. He places an emphasis on creating vegetable-based dishes with sustainable, waste-reducing methods in his New York City restaurants Graffiti, Graffiti Earth and Me & You. Mehta has appeared on a variety of television shows including “The Next Iron Chef,” where he was a runner up, “Iron Chef America” and “Martha Stewart Living.”

Residents at The Evergreens asked Mehta about his passion for healthy cuisine, including the “Chef Jehangir Pledge” at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which aims to work with students to decrease food waste. Mehta also serves as the Chef Ambassador for Beyond Celiac, an organization dedicated to educating people about and finding a cure for Celiac Disease, and has created cooking classes and after-school programs for children to teach healthy eating habits.

“It is exciting to have such an innovative, celebrated chef visit our community,” said Doug Halvorsen, President and CEO of The Evergreens. “Chef Mehta’s dedication to healthy, clean and sustainable cuisine was enthusiastically received by our residents. We strive to provide quality programming and top-notch dining experiences year-round, and this visit from Chef Mehta is just the most recent example of The Evergreens’ emphasis on first-class food and cultural experiences.”

Working in collaboration with executive chefs from The Evergreens’ culinary service partner Flik Lifestyles, a member of Compass Group North America and division of Flik Hospitality Group, Chef Mehta visited The Evergreens community as part of the “Celebrity Chef Series.” Through this series, celebrity chefs travel around the country preparing meals and holding cooking demonstrations featuring fresh, wholesome ingredients for various communities.
