Burlington Township 10u Baseball heading to Cal Ripken World Series
For many youth travel baseball teams, the hope is to be competitive, have fun and win a tournament or two. For the Burlington Township 10u baseball team, its summer has been one to remember. Despite not lifting a trophy in the first five tournaments, the Falcons advanced to the Cal Ripken World Series after becoming regional champions earlier this month. The Falcons defeated Flood City, Pa., on July 24, 9–6, to lift the regional championship trophy. It was the second title in a row this summer after the Falcons also won the state championship, which was the turning point for the team.
Mercury levels rise in B. Bernice Young School
In February, the B. Bernice Young School in Burlington Township tested positive for mercury inside the gymnasium. The school district removed the gymnasium’s rubberized floor, which seemed to be the cause of the mercury in the first place. On July 25, the district announced mercury levels surprisingly increased even with the removal of the gym floor. “What we found after that was there was another layer of either adhesive or primer and the mercury levels in this lower layer were actually higher than the rubberized floor itself,” Superintendent Mary Ann Bell said. The floor had previously been planned to be removed this summer, after it had been layered as part of a construction project in 1994.
Burlington Township Board of Education candidacy announced
There is a heavy ballot for the Burlington Township Board of Education as six candidates have filed to run for three seats, according to the unofficial list from the Burlington County clerk’s office. One incumbent and five challengers are running for election to the board this November. Current Board President Maryann McMahon-Nester is running for reelection. The five challengers are Marlon Addison, Antionette Minors‐Ferguson, Lisa Hodnett, Christopher Holmes, and Lisa Bungarden. The Burlington Township Board of Education election will take place on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8.
New Student Orientation and Back to School Night Dates Announced
With a little over a month until the start of school, the Burlington Township School District has recently announced the dates and times for two yearly events. New Student Orientation and Back to School Night will both take place in September for all four schools in the district. School begins on Thursday, Sept 7.
