The First Baptist Church of Haddonfield will be commemorating its founding at the original meeting site on Thursday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m.
On Thursday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m., the First Baptist Church of Haddonfield will be commemorating its founding.
At the original meeting site, Rev. Dr. Michael Feicht, pastor of First Baptist, will give a message, and Mayor Neal Rochford will read a proclamation commemorating the day which took place 200 years ago. A monument now stands where the school house stood declaring its history.
As described in the Church’s history books, “A young preacher, John Sisty, was urged by Baptist friends in Evesham to come to Haddonfield to preach. Mrs. Lettice Evans was particularly interested in having Rev. Sisty preach as she was concerned about the spiritual welfare of her son, a young man learning to be a smith in Haddonfield.”
Rev. Sisty gave his first sermon in Haddonfield on August 17, 1817 at the Grove School House, which was located at Grove and Lake Streets. This first meeting would culminate in the formation of the Haddonfield Baptist Church on June 11, 1818.
