The engagement story of Mike Blicharz and Sara Sedin

It was a long time coming

Mike and I graduated high school together, but didn’t start dating until five years later. We started talking and had our first date Memorial Day weekend of 2012. Ever since that first date, Mike and I have been an amazing team.

In July 2015, we decided to take a big step and buy our first house together. We discovered a lot of the house had issues that needed fixing. Over the next few months, we started work on the house ourselves. The house started taking on a new meaning for us. It became a true testament to our bond. Every obstacle we faced as we made the house our own showed us how well we work as a team and if we could complete this challenge then we could accomplish anything.

We spent every spare moment working on the house — including Christmas Day. Mike left my gift there so we had to go no matter what. We worked for a few hours then began cleaning up before heading home for dinner.

That’s when Mike called me into the living room. He wrapped his big arms around me, looked at me with a mischievous smile and said, “Now, the best way for me to give you your gift is to break up with you.” Knowing his sense of humor I just looked at him and said, “Try again.” He smiled bigger and replied, “The best way is to break up with you because I want you to be my wife.” Stunned, I could only reply, “…what?” As he pulled the ring case from behind my back and asked me to marry him, I cried tears of joy as I said yes. We were both so happy hugging and laughing in the middle of our torn apart house wearing dirty work clothes covered in plaster and saw dust. It was the perfect engagement for us.

The house has taken a lot of time and resources to finish, but a year and a half later we can finally call it home. Mike and I are hopeful we can now start to make our wedding plans in the near future.
