Mayor’s Column: fourteenth annual Summer Concert Series

Also, information on addiction awareness program, junior police academy and discounted tickets to Morey’s Piers in Wildwood

Voorhees Township Committee is proud to present its fourteenth annual Summer Concert Series to be held on the “Great Lawn” at Connolly Park. This year, the organization has partnered with Iron Hill Brewery to include a “Beer Garden” for each of the concerts. In addition, food trucks have been invited, so come early with beach chairs or a blanket to enjoy a great evening.

The first free show is Thursday, June 22, and will feature “Beginnings,” the world’s number one tribute to Chicago. They are billed as “The ultimate Chicago Band” and will be one of the most enjoyable and entertaining shows you will ever see. Chicago’s timeless classics transcend generations.

The second show is Thursday, July 20, and will feature “Tusk, the Ultimate Fleetwood Mac Tribute.” Tusk covers the greatest hits of Fleetwood Mac and their more than 30 years of making music. Tusk performs the songs that dominated the charts during the band’s formative years.

The final concert will be Thursday, Aug. 24, featuring “Long Live the Beatles,” the premier Beatles cover band. If you want to know what the Beatles experience was all about, this is the band to see. This mind blowing performance takes the audience back in time with the legendary foursome delivering a note-for-note theatrical event that is the next best thing to seeing the Beatles.

The Summer Twilight Series concludes with the township’s annual “Movie Night in the Park” on Saturday, Sept. 23, featuring the popular animated movie “Sing” on the “big screen.”

The Township’s Summer Twilight Series provides free fun for all ages with plenty of parking.

The Summer Twilight Series is made possible due to the generosity of the township’s sponsors: Republic Bank, Hardenbergh Insurance Group, Virtua, DiMeglio Construction Company, TD Bank, New Jersey American Water, Hale Trailer, South Jersey Radiology Associates and Kennedy Health.

The “Beer Garden” and food trucks will be open at 6:30 p.m. and shows begin at 7:30 p.m.

**The fifth annual “Right in Our Own Backyard” addiction awareness program will be held on Tuesday, June 13, at 6 p.m. at the Mansion. Tickets are $50 and include two drink tickets, buffet and DJ entertainment. Since its inception, the program has provided the necessary information about the opiate/heroin epidemic which affects people in all walks of life. Tragically, the number of overdose deaths in New Jersey is more than triple the national rate and there are now more overdose deaths than from homicide, suicide, car accidents or AIDS. All proceeds go to the Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Southern New Jersey (JFCS) for the “Right in Our Own Backyard” program. The program was started in memory of Justin M. Wolfe.

**The Voorhees Police Department will hold their fourth annual Junior Police Academy from July 17 through July 21. The program teaches our young people from the ages of 12 to 17 to appreciate and respect the duties and life of a police officer. Interested parents and applicants can contact Lt. William Walsh (856) 882–1107 [email protected]. Applications and forms for the Junior Police Academy can be found at vtpd.com/JPA. Applications must be submitted by June 30 to be considered.

** Voorhees Township is offering discounted tickets to Morey’s Piers in Wildwood. Tickets are available in the Municipal Clerk’s Office at Voorhees Town Hall. Prices vary according to the type of ticket and several options are available to residents and non-residents. For more information about tickets visit www.voorheesnj.com.
