Council discusses recreation improvements at most recent meeting

A pair of ordinances would improve recreation facilities and a hockey rink.

Moorestown Township Council discussed a pair of ordinances at its meeting last week that would improve recreation facilities in town.

The first is a bond ordinance appropriating $225,000 and authorizing the issuance of $213,750 in bonds or notes to be used for improvement to recreation center facilities, including the replacement of a noncompliant handicap ramp and the replacement of an HVAC unit at the New Albany Parks and Recreation Center.

The second appropriates an additional $50,000 to reconstruct the shelter of the hockey rink at Wesley Bishop Park. The ordinance originally allocated $80,000 before council amended it.

A public hearing will be held on the ordinances at the June 12 council meeting.

Among approved consent agenda resolutions at the meeting was the temporary closure and detour of North Church Street and West Main Street for replacement of the water main. Township manager Tom Merchel did not know how long the replacement would take or when it would start.

Continuing the discussion on water, resident Anne Matlack expressed concern to council over the water in her home. When Matlack was getting ready to put her 11-year-old son to bed one Saturday night, he turned on the sink to brush his teeth only to find brown water coming out of the faucet, an occurrence Matlack said is not unusual in her home. Matlack brought a pitcher of the tinted water to the meeting to show council.

“Did anyone want to take home my water and have their 11 year old brush their teeth with this water?” Matlack asked. “Because this was all Saturday night for half an hour.”

Deputy Mayor Stacey Jordan agreed with Matlack, as did Councilman Mike Locatell. However, Locatell noted while the water is unpleasant, it’s not dangerous.

“It’s magnesium and iron. It’s not the greatest thing to shower in and certainly not to brush your teeth in, but it is not a contaminant,” Locatell said.

“It’s definitely something that we’re very conscious of,” he added.

The next Township Council meeting will be held on Monday, June 12 at town hall with official action at 7:30 p.m. preceded by a 7 p.m. workshop.
