Letter to the Editor: Jennifer Chuang

I am humbled and honored to announce that my candidacy for New Jersey State Assembly has been endorsed by esteemed vaccine experts Dr. Paul Offit, Dr. Peter Hotez, and vaccine law expert, professor Dorit Rubinstein Reiss.

It is critical to me as a pediatrician and an internal medicine physician to protect the public health of residents in New Jersey against vaccine preventable diseases. Fear of vaccination has led to current outbreaks of measles in Minnesota and Europe in vulnerable underimmunized populations. I am so privileged to have the support of these leaders who are dedicated to protecting the health of children.

Paul Offit, MD, is a pediatric infectious disease specialist and an expert on vaccines, immunology and virology. He is the co-inventor of a rotavirus vaccine that has been credited with saving hundreds of lives every day. He is a frequent writer and speaker about the importance of vaccinations.

Excerpts from Dr. Offit’s statements on Facebook on Friday: “She’s amazing. Strong, resolute, clearly dedicated to the health and well being of children and their families. It’s heartening to see physicians like Dr. Chuang getting into politics. I endorse her fully.”

Peter Hotez, MD/PhD, is a pediatric infectious disease specialist whose research focuses on developing vaccines for tropical diseases. He has written several books and papers regarding his research and experience.

Dr. Hotez’s statements on Facebook and Twitter on Thursday: “Endorsing @jenchuang_md 4 #NJ State Assembly LD7. She supports protecting children from #vaccine preventable illnesses. #DrChuang4NJAssembly”

Dorit Rubinstein Reiss, PhD, LLB, is a law professor whose work focuses on legal issues related to vaccines including exemption laws and tort liability related to non-vaccination.

Dr. Reiss’s statements on Facebook on Friday: “As a mom, a vaccine advocate, and someone who studies vaccine law and policy I am very excited to hear about Dr. Jennifer Chuang’s decision to run for office. Dr. Chuang is a pediatrician practicing in an academic pediatric hospital in Philadelphia, with a focus on adolescent medicine. She is entering politics to promote science-based policies that help and protect people.I have followed Dr. Chuang’s thoughtful, careful Facebook posts on medical issues, from access to healthcare through medical marijuana and vaccines. I appreciate the combination of caring, fact and science based positions, and passion she brings to these issues. I also appreciate her respectful, clear, and dignified manner in discussions. We need more people with medical and scientific background informing policy on such matters. It’s simply exciting to see someone of Dr. Chuang’s caliber running for office. New Jersey is lucky in her, and I hope she is elected and gets a chance to work to improve policies. #DrChuang4NJAssembly”

It is an incredible honor to me to have the support of these leaders in vaccine research and education and whose names and are known throughout the field of pediatrics.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Chuang, MD, MS, FAAP

Candidate for NJ State Assembly 7th Legislative District
