Washington Township senior Jake Hanzel scored a 73 at the Central/South Jersey Group IV tournament, earning him the individual champion title. Hanzel will advance to states on Monday, May 22. Washington Township Police Department will be holding their first Citizen Police Academy the first weeken of June through July, offering residents an inside look at policing and department administration. Also, junior Brandon Searles is working to complete his Eagle Scout service project, one of the last steps in earning the final Boy Scouts rank. Citizen Police Academy to be an ‘eye opening experience’
From June 5 to July 17, residents will have the chance to participate in Washington Township Police Department’s first Citizen Police Academy. Meeting from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, participants will learn about almost every aspect of police training, challenges and day-to-day work. Residents who attend the academy will be able to better understand why officers do what they do, and also better prevent certain situations in their own community.
Senior Jake Hanzel places first at sectional golf tournament
Washington Township High School senior Jake Hanzel advanced to the state championship, the Tournament of Champions, after winning the sectional tournament this week, second in the golf team’s history. Hanzel shot a 73 to tie Lenape High School’s Doug Ergood, bringing the two to a playoff shot. Hanzel putted a birdie to secure the win.
CRMS Drama Club Spends Memorable Day in NYC
The Chestnut Ridge Middle School Drama Club, under the direction of advisor Rob Scardino, ventured to New York City on May 13 to see “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” on Broadway and then attended a workshop where the students learned a song and choreography from the show and had a question-and-answer session with two members of the cast. The students then “flash-mobbed” the finale of their recent production of “Rock of Ages” for passers-by in Times Square before enjoying dinner in the city.
Kennedy Health recognizes nursing staff with ‘Power of One’ award
Kennedy Health Nursing Department associates were awarded 2017 Kennedy “Power of One” Nursing Awards for their contributions to patient care and to Kennedy’s mission of providing comprehensive, quality health care. Awards were presented during National Nurses Week in three categories: for clinical associates, clinical nurses and a system-wide selected nurse leader, or leaders.
WTHS student wins grand prize in distracted driving PSA contest
A powerful 30-second public service announcement that delivered a memorable message about the perils of distracted driving earned Washington Township High School sophomore John Micciche both first place in his category and best overall PSA in the 14th annual Distracted Driving Public Service Announcement Contest. The event is hosted by the Gloucester County Highway Task Force. Awards were distributed on May 17.
Music technology students among winners at Rowan University expo
Washington Township High School music technology students were among area student-musicians who had the opportunity to showcase their compositions as part of the seventh annual Student Music Technology Expo and Competition at Rowan University on May 12. The event highlighted the students’ creative accomplishments in making music with technology.
Washington Township Boy Scout completes Eagle Scout service project
Brandon Searles, 16, joined the Cub Scouts 11 years ago with one of his best friends. As a junior, Searles is completing his Eagle Scout service project, one of the last steps in earning the final rank. Searles’ service project consisted of building eight picnic tables, four benches, cleaning the campsites, planting flowers, fixing signs and painting cabins at Camp Sacajawea in Newfield. Searles’ project was expected to finish last weekend, and he will move forward to receiving his badge and attending the board of review this summer.
