Washington Township community members can look forward to charitable events happening next weekend. On Friday, April 28, the Washington Township Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund will be hosting its annual Cork & Brew beer and wine tasting, while on Saturday, April 29, the Historical Preservation Commission will decorate the Olde Stone House Village will vintage automobiles at the annual Class Car Show. Also, Washington Township High School freshman Kami Hickson was honored and recognized for her achievements in track and field. WTHS freshman ‘hits the ground running’ with track achievements
With her time of two minutes and 14.99 seconds in the 800 meter dash, Washington Township High School freshman Kami Hickson, 15, is the fastest female in all of South Jersey and the third-fastest in the state this year. Hickson was also the only freshman to be named to the 2016–17 All-South Jersey Winter Track team. Described by WTHS principal Ann Moore as the ‘definition of student-athlete,’ Hickson was recognized by the district Board of Education for her dedication and “outstanding representation” of her sport, district and community.
District duo wins Philadelphia tennis tournament
District health and physical education supervisor Donna Costa teamed with Whitman Elementary School principal Ray Anderson to win the 2017 Mixed Doubles Championship at the South Philadelphia Tennis Association’s Spring Fling Tournament. Costa and Anderson participated for the first time in this event as a team and look forward to continuing their tennis partnership in future events.
Washington Township named one of the “2017 Best Communities for Music Education”
The district was cited among 527 school districts nationwide as one of the “2017 Best Communities for Music Education” by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. The award recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of the curriculum, and districts that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education. Washington Township is one of four percent of districts across the nation receiving the prestigious award in 2017, one of 37 districts recognized in the state and one of three in Gloucester County.
Students clean up school’s rain garden for Earth Day
Members of the Washington Township High School Students Against Violation of the Earth Club spent time on Wednesday cleaning out the school’s rain garden, removing weeds, leaves, and cutting back existing plants and natural grasses to spur the garden’s regrowth. Once the flowering plants and grasses begin thriving in the coming weeks, the group will be installing signage to remind visitors to respect the beauty and importance of the space.
Cork & Brew tasting event raises funds for student scholarships
The Washington Township Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund will host its 10th annual Cork & Brew event at the Wedgwood Country Club on Friday, April 28 at 6 p.m. More than 200 wines, beers and liquors from around the world are available to taste while attendees socialize and network with neighbors and friends. The nonprofit event has awarded more than $72,000 in scholarships to students throughout the past 10 years.
Annual Classic Car Show scheduled for April 29
The Washington Township Historical Preservation Commission will hold its ninth annual Classic Car Show on Saturday, April 29. Members of the community are invited as spectators and car owners to benefit the commission and its restoration efforts. This year’s event, held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Olde Stone House Village, located at 208 Egg Harbor Road in Sewell, will feature many family-friendly activities. All proceeds go back to the commission, unfunded by the township, and its conservation of historical sites, such as the Olde Stone House and Historic Village.
