This week in the neighborhood, Mayor James Bilella discussed four unused plots around the area and a meeting was held about the future of one of the area’s oldest buildings.

Berlin Borough to develop four unused lots around area
Walk down South White Horse Pike, the heart of Berlin Borough, with popular destinations such as Marie Fleche Memorial Library and King of Pizza, and you may notice an eyesore. There’s a large, empty lot on the corner of South White Horse Pike and Cross Keys Road right in the middle of the most hustle-and-bustle part of the small town. In total, the area has four redevelopment plots like this, but Mayor James Bilella said they will hopefully not be unoccupied for long.
Historic Preservation Commission holds meeting on historic Jackson Road building
From the outside, the house located at 11 Jackson Road doesn’t look like much. Trees shield the structure from being visible from most angles on the street, and if you get close enough, you’ll see the front door is boarded up. Still, the prospect of demolishing the more than 150-year-old building was enough to get Berlin residents talking.
The Borough of Berlin Historic Preservation Commission held a meeting Thursday, April 19 to discuss the future of the historic building. Schaeffer Land LLC applied to demolish and remove the existing structure located at block 1400 in lot 14, citing structural concerns with the old building. They would then subdivide the plot of land into three, and build three new homes.

The historic Berlin Borough is turning 90 next month. Join the community at Berlin Borough Hall at 59 S. White Horse Pike for cake and live music from Modern Mojo. It runs from 3 to 5 p.m.
