Seneca students excel in competitions during two day conference
Seneca High School’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) club attended the NJ State Spring FCCLA Conference at the Cherry Hill Crowne Plaza March 23 and March 24. Students in FCCLA applied what they learned in Fashion and Clothing class’s curriculum to design various articles of clothing for the fashion competitions. Likewise, students in FCCLA applied what they learned in the Foods and Nutrition curriculum to design various dishes in the food competitions.
There were fashion runway-style competitive events and food preparation competitions. Several Seneca High School students medaled in their respective competitions.
Brianna Cozens (Class 0f 2017) won the Gold Medal for her entry in the Sportswear Jacket category. Hanna Chamberlain (Class of 2017 and President of FCCLA) won the Gold Medal for the Evening Wear category. Madison Willitts (Class of 2019) won the Silver Medal for the Sportswear Shirt and Skirt category. Kylie Kunz (class of 2019) won the Silver Medal Sportswear Knit Dress category. Emily O’Neill (class of 2018) won the Bronze Medal for the Evening Wear category. Michelle Bennett (Class of 2020) won the Gold Medal in the Junior Division for the Sewing for Service category. Madison Hackney (Class of 2019) won the Gold Medal in the Senior Division for Sewing for Service category.
Nicole Cozens (Class of 2018) won the Gold Medal for the Cake Decorating category. The cake decorating category is an intense competition where preparation was done entirely in front of the judges.
Additionally, the FCCLA club was able to serve the community. As part of the conference, Seneca’s students were able to donate 75 cans for the conference’s food drive and $100 to the Ronald McDonald House.
FCCLA adviser and Family and Consumer Science teacher Suzanne Arfuso was impressed with all of the students’ work.
“Many of the students have been staying after for some time trying to finish their garments,” Arfuso said. “Some of the medalists only started sewing a few months ago, so this is a major accomplishment and a testament to their hard work.
