MHS hosts 2nd Annual Talent Show on April 26

The proceeds will benefit Mercy High School in Malawi, Africa.

On Wednesday, April 26, Moorestown High School will be hosting its second annual talent show. This event will feature performances from all classes and the proceeds will go to benefit not only the four high school classes, but also Mercy High School in Malawi, Africa.

Located in southern Malawi, Mercy High School is one of five programs run by MercyCare Malawi, whose mission and focus is to “transform lives through education.” As Malawi is currently ranked the poorest country in the world, Mercy High School is the start of something special.

Founded in 2010 by Peter Gamula, the school went from teaching 35 students in one rented classroom to teaching over 450 students in five classrooms on their 9-acre campus. Peter Gamula will be in Moorestown from Thursday, March 16 until Tuesday, April 4, and will receive a monetary donation from MHS on Tuesday, March 21 at the regular Board of Education meeting to be held at the William Allen Middle School at 7 p.m. The money was raised during the homecoming spirit week events in the fall, and the student body decided to again donate some of the proceeds from the talent show to Mercy High School.

As this school is in need of many supplies, the Moorestown High School donation will be used to provide a year’s worth of Internet service, a flat screen monitor, a wireless router and a webcam. Eventually, these advancements will allow MHS and Mercy High School to connect via Skype and share cultural similarities and differences, giving both MHS and Mercy High School students a better understanding of what life is like beyond their communities.

Money will be raised through ticket and concession sales at the upcoming talent show event, all of which is planned in coordination with faculty class advisor, Lisa Trapani.
