The event will serve to spotlight the AmeriCorps and Senior Corps Programs
Burlington County Freeholder Linda Hughes has announced that April 4 will mark “Recognition Day for National Service” in Burlington County.
The event will serve as a part of a national initiative being led by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the National League of Cities, the National Association of Counties, and Cities of Service, which supports Rowan College at Burlington County’s Retired Senior & Volunteer Program (RSVP).
“The Retired Senior & Volunteer Program of Burlington County is a service organization based at RCBC’s Pemberton Campus which provides enriching opportunities for residents to get involved and make positive contributions to the community,” Hughes said. “Thanks to the dedicated volunteers of our RSVP program throughout the county, residents are able to receive a wide variety of essential services at little to no expense.”
Hughesn also said last year 237 RSVP volunteers provided 23,625 hours of service which adds up to a total of $605,488 saved by local governments.
According to the county, the Retired Senior & Volunteer Program offers “one-stop-shopping” for those aged 55 and over who want to find community service opportunities in Burlington County. RSVP then partners with area non-profit agencies to impact community needs. Contributions include tutoring, literacy programs, health insurance counseling and providing educational programming on a number of topics.
“We are asking the mayors and local governing bodies of Burlington County to join the Freeholder Board, as well as nearly 3,000 mayors and county executives throughout the nation, in participating in this important recognition of community service,” Hughes said. “This day is an excellent opportunity to recognize AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs and their impact on the community, to thank those who serve and encourage everyone to find ways to give back to their communities.”
According to the county, the Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that engages millions of Americans in service through AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, the Social Innovation Fund, and the Volunteer Generation Fund.
