My husband and I met in Sunday school. It was his first time visiting that day in August 1978. Just a few short weeks later when I started my new school I found that this boy was sitting right next to me. It was his first day also.

Our first date was in March 1979. Since we were only in eighth grade we went for a bike ride. We were inseparable until we graduated high school and he went off to Basic Training for the Air Force. In between Technical School and his first assignment to Spain, we got married.

His mother said to me, “I never told you but the day you met, he told me that he just met the girl he is going to marry.” I love my mother-in-law!

Here we are 33 years later — four kids and four grandkids — and we are still inseparable. Wining, dining, dancing and PDA is only a small part of romance. Our secrets locked within our shared history that we keep only for us is our romance. Complete trust and respect is romantic. Never saying or doing anything that would embarrass or hurt each other, that is romantic.

My advice for young couples is to figure out if you need this person or if you want this person. Not needing your partner but wanting your partner is key. Sounds counter to what most people would say, but when you need someone it can cause you to tolerate or dismiss things because you need them for what they can do, give or be for you. When you want someone then you are truly in love with who the person is, regardless of what they can do, give or be for you.

My mother told me not to marry him. She said, “He will never be able to give you what you want.” Little did she know that all I wanted was him, period.
