Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi and Burlington City Police Chief Alan R. Snow announced today that two men were arrested yesterday in connection with the fatal shooting that occurred Saturday night in Burlington City.
Irie Y. Simmons, 18, of the 5000 block of Highland Drive in Pennsauken, was charged with Murder, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.
Xavier L. Myers, 19, of the 700 block of South Warrington Avenue in Cinnaminson, was charged with one count of Aggravated Assault.
The investigation revealed that Simmons and Myers approached Eric Thomas II, 30, of Eastampton, at approximately 10:40 p.m. on Jan. 21 near the intersection of East Broad and Library streets.
Simmons and Myers fled after the shooting, but were picked up in the area by police a short time later. Police officers from the Burlington City, Burlington Township, and the Burlington County Bridge Commission police departments responded to the scene of the shooting.
Thomas was transported to Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County in Willingboro, where he was pronounced dead at 11:29 p.m. The firearm believed to be used in the shooting has been recovered. The circumstances surrounding the motive for the shooting are being investigated.
Both defendants will have a first appearance today in Superior Court in Mount Holly.
The investigation is being conducted by detectives from the Burlington City Police Department and the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office.
