The Department of Parks & Recreation is hard at work preparing for summer 2017.
As we enter January 2017 and are still reveling in the newness of this New Year, the Department of Parks & Recreation is hard at work preparing for summer 2017. It may seem hard to believe, but in the Recreation Nation, despite the wintry mix we are living in now, summer is right around the corner.
As we prepare for summer 2017, there are a number of changes that will be occurring within the summer parks programs, Summer Theater and other Recreation summer programs. Due to the comprehensive construction schedule that Moorestown Township Public Schools (MTPS) will be facilitating this summer, the Department of Parks & Recreation will be operating the Summer Parks Program out of Baker Elementary School, Roberts Elementary School and New Albany Recreation Center, and the Children’s Summer Theater will be operating out of South Valley Elementary School.
The Summer Special Needs Program that dovetails with the MTPS Extended School Year (ESY) program will be housed at South Valley Elementary as well. Currently, the four and five-year-old programs are being scheduled for the New Albany Recreation Center with its newly renovated interior rooms.
Summer camps and clinics are scheduled to operate all summer long — from the ever popular sports camp to the soccer clinic, to art camp and cooking camps the Recreation Nation will offer a complete host of opportunities for youth. Most camps will run for one or two weeks with varying topics and skill levels. Ages and interest levels typically divide camps. Summer camps and clinics will be advertised and open for registration in late spring. If there is a camp that you are interested in, or a camp not offered that you would like to see, please email the department at [email protected] to present your ideas.
Additionally, with all of the Recreation summer camps comes summer employment. Yes, for those teens, college students and young adults seeking summer employment, applications for employment and counselors-in-training will be available by Tuesday, Jan. 10. Paid employment opportunities are available for young people 16 years and older. The deadline for paid counselors, site supervisors and clinic instructors will be Friday, March 10. The 2017 CIT program has changed so we encourage young people to fully read the new job descriptions. The CIT program is open to young people age 13 through 16 and is highly competitive. There are limited spaces available for this program and the deadline for application is Friday, March 31. There are no extensions for the 2017Â program.
