What will your New Year’s resolution be? Let the Department help you!

Happy New Year! Ushering in the New Year is always filled with hope, energy, new promises and new commitments, and then by Tuesday, Jan. 10 we stand looking in the mirror asking ourselves, “How am I going to do this?” The Moorestown Department of Parks & Recreation has a tremendous “New Year’s selection” to help you achieve your new goals. The Department’s wide array of offerings can help any Moorestonian achieve at least one of their New Year’s resolutions.

First, there is the ever-present goal of “fitness.” Improvements in health and fitness top the list annually for New Year’s resolutions, but nearly 80 percent of them fail. Why? Largely because people have a hard time finding a fitness regimen that fits their lifestyle. That’s no problem here in the Recreation Nation!

From boot camp to yoga, from youth sports leagues and clinics to adult open play leagues, there are fitness opportunities for every fitness level. Youth and teen basketball leagues and volleyball clinics are available for those young people looking for fun and active competition.

Adults also have the opportunity to play these sports in the open adult league. Additionally, bowling and pickleball are available for those seeking competition and friendly play. For those seeking fitness where one competes against oneself, there is boot camp, Girls B Fit and yoga. This winter the Special Needs Indoor Field Day will be held on Sunday, Jan. 8 and will provide the opportunity for individuals with special needs and their families to be active and engaged. Each program invites a variety of fitness levels and a variety of times. One size does not fit all at Parks & Recreation, so programs are made available for all residents.

How about that resolution to “get involved,” or to volunteer? The Recreation Nation is seeking adults who want to give their time and talents to help coach and support Recreation’s leagues. Volunteering to work with children is a rewarding experience start to finish. Getting involved as a volunteer coach is an exciting and rewarding experience where coaches have the opportunity to work with and connect with young people. Recreation’s leagues are a great way to “try out” your New Year’s resolution for volunteering. Seasons typically run eight weeks and include one weekly practice with one game each weekend. Coaches are sought for soccer, field hockey, basketball and lacrosse, as well as for other clinics and camps. Try it out — the Recreation Nation needs you.

For those whose resolutions fall into the category of “self-improvement” or “new skills,” there are a variety of youth art classes and children’s culinary classes. Developing the creative side of the brain is essential in our youth and offering young people the opportunity to explore this side is a focal point of the Department of Parks & Recreation. From arts and crafts to dinners and full menus, young people are offered the opportunity to delve into that creative side of recreation.

The wide variety of topics and times makes Recreation the perfect source for fulfilling goals of self-improvement. For those adults interested in pursuing culinary classes, a minimum number of participants is required to run a class. Interested in learning new cooking skills with professional chefs?
