The movie on Jan. 22 is “Aaron Copeland and the American Sound” — Part of the series: Keeping Score — this informative DVD, narrated by Music Director, Michael Tilson Thomas, with the San Francisco Symphony, explores the life and music of Aaron Copeland. Copland’s music captured the energy of American’s bustling cities and the vast quiet of its empty plains. He created a musical style that evoked the diversity of the American people. The sounds of Jewish music, African-American jazz, folk songs, cowboy ballads, and Latin American dances all played their parts in his compositions.

On March 5, TBS Hazak presents “The Lady in Number 6.” Alice Herz-Sommer, 109, and the world’s oldest Holocaust survivor at the time, tells the story of how music saved her life: both during her time at Theresienstadt concentration camp and in the years afterward. Alice derives her supreme optimism from music. As Alice was so fond of saying; “I have lived through many wars and have lost everything many times — including my husband, my mother and my beloved son. Yet, life is beautiful, and I have so much to learn and enjoy. I have neither space nor time for pessimism and hate.”

The cost for the series is $8. Without a reservation, the cost is $10 per person per event. Refreshments will be served. An RSVP is required by Jan. 18.

To attend, send a check made out to Hazak and mail it to Temple Beth Sholom Hazak, 1901 Kresson Road, Cherry Hill NJ 08003. Call Thelma Hilibrand at (856) 795–3682 with questions.
