Weekly Roundup: Carolyn Jacobs wins Cherry Hill Council election, veterans honored at Spring Hills

A Cherry Hill West boys cross country runner also achieved something no runner had achieved with the program in more than 40 years.

Democratic candidate Carolyn Jacobs was victorious in Tuesday’s Cherry Hill Township Council special election, while veterans were honored at a local senior community. Catch up on all of the top stories of the week in the Weekly Roundup.

Jacobs wins Cherry Hill council election; Scarpellino, Schultz and Wang elected to BOE

On Tuesday, voters in Cherry Hill Township elected incumbent Democrat Carolyn Jacobs to a one year, unexpired term on township council. Jacobs defeated Republican challenger Rick Short in the election. In the Cherry Hill Board of Education election, incumbent Jane Scarpellino and newcomers Ruth Schultz and Edward Wang emerged from a crowded field to win seats.

Sari Isdaner Early Childhood Center students cast their ballots on Election Day

While many Cherry Hill adults were casting their ballots for government officials on Election Day, 2-year-olds at the Katz JCC’s Sari Isdaner Early Childhood Center were voting in a completely different kind of election. The students voted in class for their favorite snack. In Janice Herskovits’ class, students choose to have cookies over pretzels by a 12–5 vote.

Donald Trump elected president, but Cherry Hill voters overwhelmingly choose Hillary Clinton

While the national vote for President of the United States ended up being close, the vote locally in Cherry Hill Township was not. More than 62 percent of Cherry Hill voters chose Hillary Clinton to be the next president of the United States on Tuesday, compared to just 31.9 percent of voters for Donald Trump. This continues a decades long trend of Cherry Hill voters overwhelmingly voting for the Democratic candidate in presidential elections.

Veterans honored at Spring Hills Cherry Hill Assisted Living

On Monday, a number of veteran residents at Spring Hills Cherry Hill Assisted Living were honored for their service. Cherry Hill Mayor Chuck Cahn gave medals and certificates to five veterans who served in either World War II or the Korean War. At the ceremony, some of the veterans shared stories about their time in the service.

Robert Abrams ends long drought for Cherry Hill West boys’ cross country

Heading into the South Jersey Group III sectional meet on Nov. 5, it had been 42 years since a Cherry Hill West boys’ cross country runner had won a sectional meet. Senior Robert Abrams changed all that as he dashed past the opposition at Delsea Regional High School to win the South Jersey Group III individual title.
