Two Raccoons Test Positive for Rabies in Medford Lakes

Freeholder Mary Ann O’Brien alerted residents that two wild raccoons have tested positive for rabies. A wild raccoon that was submitted for rabies testing on Friday, Oct. 7 and another wild raccoon that was submitted for testing on Monday, Oct. 10 have both tested positive for the disease. The raccoons were captured in Medford Lakes in Burlington County. One in the 200 Block of Kihade Trail and the second in the 100 Block of Wagush Trail.

“To date, no cases of human exposure to these infected animals have been identified,” said Freeholder O’Brien. “We are asking residents for their cooperation in this matter. If you have been scratched or bitten by a raccoon in the last two weeks, please contact the Burlington County Health Department immediately.”

Effective precautions against rabies include:

· Vaccinate all dogs and cats against rabies. Check with your veterinarian to make sure your pets have up-to-date protection against rabies.

· Don’t leave pet food out where wild animals can access it.

· Remind children to avoid animals they don’t recognize, especially stray or wild animals.

· Report any raccoon, fox, bat or skunk that is out during the day in a residential area or that is behaving strangely to the Burlington County Health Department.

· Don’t attempt to assist injured or sick animals without professional help.

Burlington County residents can contact the Burlington County Health Department at (609) 265–5548 for additional information or with any questions or concerns.
