Oct. 2 through Oct. 8 is Mental Illness Awareness Week. Each year, the week provides an opportunity to fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for equal care.

One in five adults experience mental illness problems every year. Although many people today understand that mental illness is a medical condition, individuals and families affected by mental illness are still often subjected to stigma and discrimination.

This year, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is calling on everyone to shine a light on mental illness and replace stigma with hope. Tuesday, Oct. 4 is the National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding. The prayers and actions of both faith communities and secular organizations can help to shine a light on mental illness and replace stigma with hope.

In addition, as part of MIAW, National Depression Screening Day will be held on Thursday, Oct. 6. Organizations around the world are encouraged to offer free, anonymous questionnaires that can help individuals identify potential signs of depression. Join NAMI in shining a light on mental illness and replacing stigma with hope by taking the pledge to be stigma free by going to ww.nami.org/stigmafree. NAMI offers information about mental illness conditions, symptoms and treatment at www.nami.org or through its HelpLine at 1–800–950-NAMI (6264).

Learn more about Mental Illness Awareness Week at www.nami.org/miaw. Register for the event at [email protected] or (856) 222–9400.
