This summer was the forty-fourth Anniversary of the Department of Parks and Recreation Moorestown Summer Theater Program. Beginning in 1973 with an all-volunteer staff to produce “Tom Sawyer,” the Parks Theater Program has grown and evolved into a mainstay of Moorestown culture and activity. This year also marked the second year of the Recreation Teen Theater Program. Following a tremendously successful first year, the 2016 season boasted a wonderful performance of James and the Giant Peach. The continued success and growth of both programs has secured the Recreation Theater efforts in the annual calendar.
This summer Shrek Jr. brought performers and theater patrons out in droves. With a cast of more than 100 children and the support of Recreation staff and CITs, this production was a huge success. Over the course of three days, these actors and actresses performed four back-to-back shows to a consistently packed house. The diversity of this production allowed for an increased number of children to hold individual parts as well as chorus roles. The goal of Recreation Theater is to highlight the talent and abilities of all children and allow novice performers the opportunity to become involved. By encouraging diversity and accessibility in the theater, children are able to find their voice and improve their self-confidence in an encouraging and supportive environment.
The Recreation Teen Theater has been a tremendous addition to the recreation summer offerings. Many of these Teen participants grew up on Recreation Summer Theater and were thrilled to be able to expand their experience. Boasting a sturdy cast of nearly 20 players, Teen Theater performed an amazing rendition of James and the Giant Peach. In the true spirit of Shakespearean theater, this production was held on the third floor of the Church Street Recreation Center. This close set allowed a true immersion of the audience into the production.
Both of the theater programs offered by the Department of Parks and Recreation follow the mission and objective of the department, to “serve the needs and interest of Moorestown Township residents by providing constructive and creative leisure opportunities through the continuation and development of facilities and programs that strengthen community life.” Making opportunities accessible for all residents and offering residents active participation in all programs is essential to the mission of the department. The ability of the Recreation Summer Theater and the Teen Theater to reach young people, novice or experienced, with a passion for the theater allows each individual to engage, grow and develop their skills.
Opportunities continue throughout the year, with the next Teen Program coming this fall — Teen Café Live on the third floor. Young people are encouraged to showcase their talents and have performed for the last year in front of a packed house.
