Save the Environment of Moorestown is hosting its annual photo contest, calling for entries

Moorestown is known for its rich history, businesses and community, but it is also known for its natural beauty with its tree canopy, farmland and lakes. Save the Environment of Moorestown is calling for locals to capture and appreciate the natural beauty of Moorestown with its annual Nature in Moorestown Photo Contest and STEM Picnic.

The 2016 Nature in Moorestown Photo Contest has started and is accepting entries until June 24. Locals are called to go out and capture photos of Moorestown’s plants and wildlife. The winners will be judged and chosen on June 26 at the STEM’s annual picnic.

“This is a way to display the abundance of natural beauty in Moorestown so we can all appreciate what we have all around us,” photo contest coordinator Bill Creekmore said.

STEM was founded in 1972 as a grassroots organization with a mission to preserve, protect and enhance the natural environment of Moorestown for today’s and future generations. STEM sponsors the photo contest annually to show its appreciation of nature.

“(The photo contest is important to) encourage people to preserve areas of our town and capture the beauty within these spaces. I personally love Boundary Creek. Some of us call it the healing place. Our mind can be relaxed by observing nature,” Creekmore said. “Photography allows us to take a closer look at our surrounding nature and capture it for others as well as ourselves. The results are a form of artwork.”

Adults and students 18 or younger are invited to participate and submit photos of the nature found in Moorestown.

All photos must have been taken after June 2015 and submitted as five-by-seven inch prints with the following information on the back: title, name, address and e-mail address, adult or student (18 years old or younger), and location and date of photo taken in Moorestown. Digital editing and adjustments are accepted, but not photo montages. Please mail entries to STEM, P.O. Box 704, Moorestown, N.J. 08057 by June 24.

The photo contest and picnic have been held in Moorestown for 16 years. The event is held to have STEM members and guests meet, have professional judges choose the winners of submitted photos, and enjoy discussing the photography results during a potluck meal.

“(People should come to) enjoy the company of others with a common interest in nature and why certain photos are picked as winners … though actually they are all winners,” Creekmore said.

The picnic is being held on June 26 at 4 p.m. at 12 Pepperbush Lane in Moorestown. The judges for the contest will be Bob Laramie of Laramie Photography Studio and Gretchen Rector of Maple Shade-Moorestown Camera Club. Winners will receive a ribbon for their achievement.
