Fatal vehicle crash and escaped shoplifting suspect top this week’s Mt. Laurel Police Report

On Jan. 7 at 3:04 p.m. Mt. Laurel Police responded to a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Elbo Lane and Hainesport Road. The investigation revealed a 2005 Hyundai Elantra traveling north on Elbo Lane sideswiped a vehicle stopped at a red traffic signal on Elbo Lane at Hainesport Road. The Hyundai continued into the intersection and struck a 1990 Buick LeSabre that was traveling west on Hainesport Road. The driver of the Buick, Margaret Loignon, age 64, of Delran was transported to Virtua Hospital Marlton where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the Hyundai, a 73-year-old female from Mt. Laurel, was charged with careless driving and failure to observe a traffic control device.

On Jan. 6 at 11:13 p.m. Mt. Laurel Police conducted a motor vehicle stop on Waverly Avenue near Federal Street. During the stop officers arrested a male, age 21, of Camden, after officers observed drugs in his vehicle. The male was charged with possession of a prescription legend drugs and possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana and released pending a court hearing.

On Jan. 5 at 2:40 p.m. Mt. Laurel Police conducted a motor vehicle stop on Nixon Drive near I295. During the stop officers arrested a male, age 26, of Pennsauken. He was charged with possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released pending a court hearing.

On Jan. 5 at 3:42 p.m. Mt. Laurel Police responded to Larchmont Boulevard at Marne Highway for the report of a vehicle that crashed into a railroad crossing sign and then left the scene. Officers stopped the vehicle on Larchmont Boulevard. During the stop officers arrested a female, age 58, of Mt. Laurel. She was charged with driving while intoxicated and several motor vehicle violations. She was released pending a court hearing.

An employee of Wawa on Route 73 reported that a suspect stole $77 worth of cigarettes from the store on Jan. 4 at 11:55 p.m. The suspect was described as a male in his mid-30s, 5’3” tall, with facial hair. He was wearing an off-white hooded sweatshirt, gray watch cap, and dark colored pants. He left the area in a black Ford pick-up.

On Jan. 4 at 1:32 p.m. Mt. Laurel Police responded to the Shop Rite on Nixon Drive for the report of a shoplifter fighting with loss prevention officers in the store. The employees reported that they confronted a suspect as he attempted to push a grocery cart containing $111 worth of merchandise out of the store without paying for it. When the employees tried to detain him, he swung at them, with two uncapped hypodermic syringes and threatened to stab them. They were able to subdue him and awaited the arrival of police. The arriving officers arrested a male, age 38, of Audubon. When they tried to take custody of him, he resisted being handcuffed. Once taken into custody officers discovered he was in possession of heroin and hypodermic syringes. The male resisted being placed into a patrol car for transport to the police station. Once in the car he claimed to be suffering from a medical emergency, requiring officers to transport the male to JFK Hospital in Cherry Hill. While receiving medical attention it was necessary to reposition his handcuffs. As this was being done he broke away from officers and ran out of the emergency room. He was recaptured approximately 45 minutes later. The male was charged with robbery, escape, possession of weapon for unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of heroin, resisting arrest and possession of a hypodermic syringe. Bail was set at $284,500 with no ten percent option and he was committed to the Burlington County Jail. No one was injured during this incident.
