Still Great-Granddaughter To Speak At Tea

Savory sandwiches, buttery scones and delectable sweets will tempt appetites at a Holiday Tea to be held at the Dr. James Still Education Center on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 6, starting at 2 p.m. The tables will be graced with greens and the room festooned with seasonal decorations to put attenders in a holiday mood.

Rev. Kathryn Gaines, Great-great Granddaughter of Dr. Still, will reminisce about the days she and her family picnicked at the site and recall the stories of Dr. Still told by her mother. Rev. Gaines who is a member of the Center’s Oversight Committee.

Reservations are required for the tea since space is limited and may be made on-line at www.medfordhistory.org or by phoning (609) 654–6485. The cost is $20 per person. The Dr. Still Education Center is located on the 1912 Bunning Farmhouse at 211 Church Road in Medford.

Dr. James Still, an herbalist, was known as “The Black Doctor of the Pines.” Born to former slaves in Shamong, in 1812, he was one of the richest men in Burlington County when he passed away in 1885. He published an autobiography in 1877 in which he recounted his life and times, including the recipes for several of the healing remedies that made him famous.

The Dr. James Still Office Historic Site is owned by the state of New Jersey and operated by the Medford Historical Society. Proceeds from the tea will benefit the programs presented at the Education Center.
