The Voorhees Township Committee went from the fun of the Memorial Day holiday last Monday to the fun of dealing with the township’s annual financial audit last Tuesday at its May 26 meeting.
Each year, the state requires municipal governing bodies to make an annual audit of accounts, books and other financial transactions.
“The auditors come in and we have auditors here for a few months and they go through all the contracts and all the bills and all the money spent,” Township Manager Larry Spellman said.
As of the May 26 meeting, the committee certified the 2014 audit, and, according to Spellman, there were no material findings.
“I always feel much better knowing there’s someone to come through and there’s no mistakes and everything is where it should be,” Spellman said.
In other news:
• Committeeman Michael Friedman was appointed as a deputy mayor for the limited duration of July 1 through July 31. Friedman requested the appointment to officiate a wedding ceremony.
Under state law, only municipal mayors and deputy mayors, not simply committee or council members, can authorize marriages and civil unions.
• Committee endorsed the submission of the 2014 Recycling Tonnage Grant application to the state. The grant program allows municipalities to apply for grants based on the total amount of recycled tonnage that was collected from residents and business throughout the year.
Any money received from the grant can then be used to fund further recycling efforts in the municipality.
“We submit every year and we get funds back for what we recycle,” Spellman said. “I think by population, we’re the largest recycling (town) in the county.”
• Committee approved a developer’s agreement for Aquatic Holdings, LLC. According to Spellman, Aquatic Holdings is partnering with the former Coliseum complex on Preston Avenue to build a new pool.
• Committee awarded a bid to the ODB Company of Richmond, Va., for one new and unused 30 CY leaf vacuum machine totaled at $48,848.
As per state law, the township publically advertised the contract to solicit the lowest possible bid, with the bid from the ODB Company as the only bid received by the township.
• Committee approved the appointment of John Bullock to the position of a part-time class II police officer within the Voorhees Township Police Department.
According to Spellman, Bullock will be one of the police officers serving in the township’s schools.
• The next meeting of the Voorhees Township Committee is scheduled for Monday, June 8.
