Woman’s Club of Medford lives up to their motto by working with the Township and local businesses to help beautify the town. On Saturday, April 18 the members sponsored a park clean up day at Bob Meyer Park. Supplies were provided by Medford Township and National Honor Society members from Shawnee High School were there to assist. Community members also volunteered their time in picking up trash and making the park more appealing.
On April 30 from 7–9pm the community is invited to shop at Girlfriend’s on Main to help support the Club’s community outreach work. Girlfriend’s will donate 20 percent of the proceeds from the shopping event to the Woman’s Club and that money will be donated to the Domestic Violence Advocacy Center in Medford to assist women needing safe haven.
In lieu of their regular meeting on May 14 and the Club will be hosting seminar on mental health entitled “Start the Conversation… Mental Health Awareness”. The seminar is open to the public and refreshments will be served. The event will run from 7–9:30 pm and will feature speakers from NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Health. Whether we are aware or not, most of us have been touched by mental illness. This seminar was born out of the tragedy that occurred in Tabernacle NJ in which a mother killer her children and herself. Perhaps if more people were aware of sign of mental illness, this tragedy could have been averted. Topics of the seminar are “Mental Health First Aid” and “Start the Conversation… Signs of Depression and the next steps. As with most things, education is the key to understanding and awareness.
Saturday, May 16 the members will be hanging flower baskets along Main Street in an effort to bring attention to the Renaissance that is occurring on the quaint street. In the last several months new businesses have opened and more are slated to join the street this summer. The Woman’s Club asked for local businesses and families to ‘sponsor’ a flower basket with a $25.00 donation. They were overwhelmed by the response and immediately had sponsors for all 52 baskets and also created a waiting list. Donors include Club members and Main Street businesses as well as local families who hope to bring more foot traffic to the quiet town.
The Woman’s Club meets monthly, September through May at the Medford Memorial Community Center at 21 S. Main Street. Women from Medford and surrounding communities are welcome to attend.
