The Mabel Kay House senior center might be getting a little bit of a makeover in the near future.
Haddonfield commissioners passed an authorization on March 10 to apply for a $21,700 grant for improvements to the Mabel Kay House.
The borough is applying for a Year 37 Community Development Block Grant for the improvements. The Federal Community Development Block Grant program provides the basic funding necessary to administer the many housing, public works, economic development and public service activities, which help to further the borough’s overall community development objectives.
This grant will be used to have the molding on the outside worked on and the building scraped and painted, according to borough clerk Deanna Bennett. The Mabel Kay House will have to have the whole house scraped and repainted. These improvements are estimated in the amount of $21,700.
In other news:
• Commissioners also approved appointments to the Recreation Commission. Those on the commission include Bob Bickel, recreation director; Jack O’Malley, mayor’s designee; Commissioner John Moscatelli; Lefteris Banos, public schools athletic director; and many others involved in various sports as well as previous mayor Tish Colombi.
• Commissioners unanimously approved three ordinances on second reading. The first was a bond ordinance for library improvements. This ordinance calls for supplemental appropriation, or an increase of $400,000 for the improvements, and will authorize the issuance of $380,000 in bonds or notes to cover part of the cost. This increases the estimated cost of the improvements from $1.8 million to $2.2 million.
The second ordinance calls for the replacement of yield signs at the intersection of Redman Avenue and Barberry Lane to stop signs to help control the speeds in that area by slowing the traffic and making for a safer commute for those going to the Elizabeth Haddon Elementary School.
The final ordinance amends the borough code to create a new chapter, entitled “Permit for Commercial Filming,” that will allow the borough to enforce and collect a permit and fee for commercial filming.
The next commissioner’s meeting is Tuesday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Borough Hall.
