Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge taking part in Great Backyard Bird Count this weekend

Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge will host the Great Backyard Bird Count and Valentine’s Day activities for the upcoming weekend.

Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count was the first online citizen-science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real-time. Since then, more than 100,000 people of all ages and walks of life have joined the four-day count each February to create an annual snapshot of the distribution and abundance of birds.

Everyone in the community is invited to participate. Simply tally the numbers and kinds of birds you see for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count. Birds can be counted from any location, anywhere in the world. Participants can submit observations by registering online for free at http://gbbc.birdcount.org.

Come out and visit Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge this weekend and enjoy a variety of fun activities for the entire family. Children ages 12 and under will receive free admission to Cedar Run on Friday, Feb. 13, Saturday, Feb. 14 and Sunday, Feb. 15 when they bring in a handmade valentine for one or more resident animals. Other free programs include Make a Pinecone Birdfeeder and coloring and activity pages in the nature center. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to help identify songbirds at the bird feeders. Kids will also receive a bird checklist to complete and turn in for a prize.
