In light of the recent spike in flu activity throughout New Jersey the Freeholders are hosting additional flu shot clinics for Camden County residents on Jan. 23 in Bellmawr and on Jan. 28 at the Camden County One Stop, 2600 Mt. Ephraim Road, Suite 105, in Camden from noon to 2 p.m.
The state Department of Health and county Department of Health are both reporting high influenza-like activity.
“In order to keep your family healthy this flu season, we encourage you to take advantage of this beneficial service provided by Camden County,” said Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to the Camden County Health Department. “Flu shots are recommended to those in high priority groups including Senior Citizens, pregnant women and chronically ill individuals.”
On Jan. 23, flu shots will be offered at the Camden County Bellmawr Regional Health Center, 35 Browning Road in Bellmawr from 1 to 4 p.m.
On Jan. 28 flu shots will be offered the Camden County One Stop, 2600 Mt. Ephraim Road, Suite 105, in Camden from noon to 2 p.m.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu was reported to be widespread in 46 states last week, up from 43 the week before. Flu seasons tend to last about 13 weeks, and CDC data suggests the nation is about seven weeks into the current season.
“The flu can have devastating effects if it is not treated right away,” Rodriguez said. “It is imperative for residents to get the vaccine and to practice good hygiene by washing your hands multiple times a day.”
The county Department of Health suggests these directions to avoid influenza:
-Cover nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing
-Wash hands thoroughly and often
-Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth
-Stay home when sick
-Get a seasonal flu shot
Flu shots are also recommended for people with weakened immune or cardiovascular systems, or with chronic metabolic diseases, renal dysfunction or blood disorders. Youngsters aged nine and older must be accompanied by an adult. Children under nine need two shots, a month apart, and should be seen by a pediatrician.
