Medford businesses participating in Shop for Autism fundraiser

Several Medford businesses will offer 10 percent off of purchases and donate 10 percent of sales to Touchdown Communities on Nov. 8 and 9 if shoppers have a “Shop for Autism” flyer or display it on their phone. The flyer is available at www.touchdowncommunities.org.

Participating merchants include Wonder World, Elderberry Designs, Girlfriends on Main, Refined on Main, and LuLu’s Lunchbox. TDC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing services to adults with autism and related disorders.

“This is a perfect opportunity to get a head start on Christmas shopping and to help a good cause,” said KidsAhead owner Libby Majewski, a Medford resident who has been working with children with autism spectrum disorders for more than 20 years and is helping to launch TDC.

Autism is a serious health issue. It is the second most common developmental disorder in the United States, affecting one in every 68 children in the country. In New Jersey, a staggering 1 in 46 children, including 1 in 28 boys, is diagnosed with an ASD, which includes autism, Asperger’s syndrome, Rett syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder.
