MFS presenting “Romeo and Juliet” with a twist on March 7 and 8

At 7 p.m. on March 7 and March 8, Moorestown Friends School will present Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with an interesting twist. The show will be set in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Performances take place in the school’s auditorium. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students, and can be purchased at the Stokes Hall reception desk during school hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The production will use all of the same language of Shakespeare, but costuming, set design, and music will provide a non-traditional backdrop for the performance.

“The great thing about Shakespeare is that the themes he uses are so universal,” said Director and Drama Teacher Mark Gornto. “In this case we chose post-Katrina New Orleans as the setting and the issue of class to demonstrate the conflict between the two households. We’re taking the ideas Shakespeare had and making them relatable to a modern audience.”

MFS students are looking forward to the performances, and encourage anyone in Moorestown to attend.
