On Saturday, Jan. 11 at 11 a.m., Dr. David Barile, Director of Palliative Medicine Services and Director of Acute Care for the Elderly Unit at the University Medical Center of Princeton, will inspire older adults to talk about the type of care they want for themselves at a Medford Leas Forum Program held in the Theater at Medford Leas.
New Jersey ranks the highest in the nation regarding health care dollars spent on Medicate beneficiaries. Older adults in the state can expect to see more doctors and undergo more tests during their final years of life than in any other state in the country. While this high level of service may sound beneficial, it has often had a negative impact on the quality of life for many older citizens.
One size does not fit all, when it comes to health care delivery and patients are better served with a more personalized approach. Barile will speak about the ways that consumers can work with their physicians and practitioners to make their wishes known in terms of their own care delivery — focusing on each persons “Goals of Care.”
Barile will discuss the New Jersey Practitioner Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment The POLST form is used to help patients and caregivers use this document in their planning for the future.
This important program is open to the public at no charge. Sponsors of this program are The Funeral Consumers Alliance of South Jersey, Medford Leas Forum Committee, and the Medford Leas Health Committee.
